The district of Völkermarkt covers 908 square kilometres and its bilingualism and proximity to neighbouring Slovenia makes it a cultural and economic melting pot. The region scores with a strong secondary sector in plant construction and is Austria's leader in terms of recycling quotas thanks to highly specialised local recycling and recovery companies.

The basis for good development and cooperation in many projects in the district of Völkermarkt is the joint regional development location, the Climate and Energy Model Region (KEM) Southern Carinthia, the Völkermarkt Business Association and the district office of the Carinthian Chamber of Commerce.
Southern Carinthia and Lake Klopeiner See in particular are considered to be among the most beautiful summer destinations in Austria. The district of Völkermarkt is also characterised by a variety of traditional and folkloric events. The Bleiburg fair for example, with well over 100,000 visitors per year, is well known far beyond its borders. Cultural highlights are guaranteed with the summer games in Eberndorf or the Heunburg Theatre. Austria's second-largest private art collection can be found in the district at the Liaunig Museum and museum fans will also get their money's worth in the Werner Berg Museum in Bleiburg.
The hospital Klinikum Klagenfurt and the state hospital LKH Wolfsberg can be reached within 30 minutes. A close network of doctors and pharmacies ensure optimal local medical care. Wellness is also very important here - for example in the VIVEA Health Hotel Bad Eisenkappel or in Carinthia's third bathhouse, which is currently being built at Lake Klopeiner See. Educational institutions such as the PraxisHAK Völkermarkt or the Alpen-Adria-Gymnasium in Völkermarkt and the FBS Völkermarkt form the backbone of knowledge.
